✨ Your business isn’t the only thing you’re leading

Your Business Is Something You Run. YOU, Inc. Is Something You Lead.

Hey Reader,

When you own a business, it can become surprisingly easy to organize your entire life around what the business needs.

What do my clients need?

What does this project need?

What does revenue need?

What needs to happen before Friday?

Those are important questions. You're the CEO. Paying attention to the business is part of the job.

But there's another question I've been thinking about as we wrap up this quarter:

What does the woman running the business need?

Because Business Owner You is important.

But she isn't all of you.

Think about the other roles that have become part of your identity over the years ...

Wife or partner. Mother. Daughter. Friend. Caregiver. Mentor.

Those roles can matter deeply without representing the entirety of who you are.

Entrepreneurship works the same way.

You can love your business, care about your clients, want to grow, and be proud of what you're building.

And still remember:

Your business is something you run.
YOU, Inc. is something you lead.

The two aren't competitors.

Your business is part of your life. For many of us, creating work that fit the life we wanted was one reason we became entrepreneurs in the first place.

The goal isn't to take from the business so you can give more to yourself — or continually take from yourself so you can give more to the business.

It's to ask:

How do I lead both well?

That's the idea I'm exploring more deeply in this week's article, Run Your Business Like a CEO. Lead Your Life Like the CEO of YOU, Inc. We’re talking about two interconnected enterprises, everyday self-leadership, and the woman you're becoming while you build your business.

And here's something I want to leave you with, even if you don't click and read the full article:

Leadership isn't only found in big strategic decisions.

Sometimes leadership is closing the laptop when you said you would.

Changing a plan that no longer makes sense.

Asking for help.

Protecting a relationship.

Investing in something you need to learn.

Acknowledging that you did good work before immediately moving on to the next thing.

Leadership is the accumulation of ordinary choices that reinforce what you've decided matters.

Your Action Step this Week

Imagine it's the end of December.

Now write a short letter to the woman you hope you'll have practiced becoming between now and then.

Start with:

Dear Future Me,
I'm proud of the way you ...

What did you protect?

What did you make room for?

What did you learn?

What did you trust yourself to do?

How did you treat yourself when things didn't go according to plan?

What are you proud of?

Write it by hand and tuck it away until December — or write an email to yourself and schedule it to arrive at the end of the year.

Not as a performance review.

As a reminder from September You about the leader you intended to practice becoming.

Because the business you're building matters.

So does the woman you're becoming while you build it.

You Already Created a Workplace. Now Choose What It’s Like to Work There. Hey Reader, Think about the places you’ve worked at over the years. Chances are, you can remember how some of them felt almost immediately. There were workplaces where people were trusted. Where mistakes became learning opportunities. Where good work was noticed. And perhaps there were others where everything was urgent, nobody really unplugged, or the official company values bore very little resemblance to what...

A Policy Is a Decision You Don’t Have to Keep Making Hey Reader, Recently, I took two actual sick days. Not “I’ll answer email from the couch” sick days. Not “I’ll rest after these three things” sick days. Actual sick days. Sinus pain. Headache. Congestion. And a brain apparently operating on dial-up internet. So I gave myself permission to stop working, retreated to a darkened room with some over-the-counter medicine, and watched mindless reality TV for two days. It was absolutely the right...

Don’t Let the Season Decide for You Hey Reader, September does something funny to me. Maybe it’s all those years of back-to-school conditioning, but put me near fresh notebooks and a good package of pens this time of year, and apparently my inner 12-year-old still has purchasing authority. There’s something irresistible about that fresh-start feeling. But as entrepreneurs, fresh-start energy can quickly turn into fresh-goal energy. Launch this. Finish that. Fix the website. Post more. Start...
