🍲 What planned leftovers taught me about business follow-through

Have Something Ready for the Woman Doing the Work

Hey Reader,

It’s just the two of us at home now. But when I make pork chops, I’ll often make four.

Two for dinner. Two extras for lunches.

Leftover soup goes into individual sealed soup mugs, ready to pop into the microwave.

I occasionally manage weekend meal prep. But planned leftovers like these examples are something I do frequently. I’m already cooking dinner or putting food away, so a little preparation fits into what’s happening.

Later, when I’ve been working all morning and need lunch, I’m glad something’s waiting.

Lunch gets easier because of a decision I made while making dinner.

Our business priorities can benefit from the same practical care. Otherwise, these scenarios may look familiar ...

You protect an hour for writing. Then spend the beginning searching for notes and remembering where you left off.

You schedule follow-up. Then have to reconstruct conversations before you can write the messages.

You made room for the work. But getting ready to do it is taking up that room.

Here’s a useful question to change that:

“What can I do now that will make this priority easier for Employee Me later?”

Perhaps you leave a sentence about where to resume before closing a document. Or record what you promised to send while finishing a call.

You’re already familiar with the work in that moment. Leave some of that clarity for Future You to make it easier for her to follow through.

In this week’s article, How to Make Your WFH Business Priorities Easier to Follow Through On, I explore how these small preparations help turn an intention into something workable — including why having materials somewhere is different from having them ready.

That distinction matters.

Soup in an individual microwave-ready mug has a clear next step.

Your business work can have one, too.

For example, “Work on marketing” leaves Employee You with several decisions to make.

“Draft Thursday’s newsletter opening using the outline linked here” gives her a place to begin.

CEO You chooses what matters. She can also arrange a useful handoff to the woman carrying it out.

And the preparation can stay small. Two sentences, a linked agenda, or a few gathered sources may be enough.

Your Action Step this Week

Choose one business priority that has time on your calendar but remains awkward to begin.

Ask:

“What do I repeatedly have to find, decide, gather, or remember before I can do this?”

Choose one step to handle in advance, ideally while doing related work.

Finish this sentence:

“To make _____ easier next time, I’ll prepare _____ while I’m already _____.”

Then try it. Did your adjustment help? Let that experience guide what you do next.

A little practical care now can give Future You something ready — and a little less work standing between her and what matters.

Make Room for the Whole Commitment Hey Reader, A friend invited me to a networking lunch recently. She was one of the sponsors, and I wanted to support her. Making connections was a good reason to attend, too. The event was 90 minutes long. But there was also a 30-minute drive each way. Arriving early to mingle. Staying afterward to continue conversations. Following up with people by text or email. The extra time easily added up to two or more hours. The invitation was for 90 minutes. My yes...

Give One Meaningful Priority a Place to Grow Hey Reader, For about 10 years, I’ve had a small boysenberry patch tucked beside our backyard garden. These berries came from starts brought over from my grandparents’ vines. Grandma and Grandpa had three or four long rows, and I have VERY fond memories of Grandma’s berry pies and boysenberry jam. My little patch has kept that connection growing. We’ve enjoyed a modest crop each year. Recently, though, we removed a diseased loquat tree, and our...

Your Business Is Something You Run. YOU, Inc. Is Something You Lead. Hey Reader, When you own a business, it can become surprisingly easy to organize your entire life around what the business needs. What do my clients need? What does this project need? What does revenue need? What needs to happen before Friday? Those are important questions. You're the CEO. Paying attention to the business is part of the job. But there's another question I've been thinking about as we wrap up this quarter:...
