Give One Meaningful Priority a Place to Grow Hey Reader, For about 10 years, I’ve had a small boysenberry patch tucked beside our backyard garden. These berries came from starts brought over from my grandparents’ vines. Grandma and Grandpa had three or four long rows, and I have VERY fond memories of Grandma’s berry pies and boysenberry jam. My little patch has kept that connection growing. We’ve enjoyed a modest crop each year. Recently, though, we removed a diseased loquat tree, and our neighbors cut down trees that had shaded the area. Suddenly, there was room — and more sunlight — to expand. I’ve transplanted a few starts and allowed runners from the original patch to reach toward the new space. I don’t have an abundant new berry harvest to show you yet. But I have the beginnings of a space where it can grow. And it’s made me wonder: What else matters to us but still lives in the little corner we gave it years ago? Maybe your own business development gets whatever time remains after client work. Maybe lunch happens if nobody needs you. Maybe the skill you want to learn keeps waiting for a quieter month. That arrangement may have served an earlier season. But I encourage you to check in with yourself now and ask: Does the space I’ve given this still match how much it matters to me? In this week’s article, I share more of the berry story and practical ways to bring a priority into your actual workweek. Read How to Make Room for What Matters in Your WFH Business … Because Your Vision Needs a Place to Live. Now, here’s somewhere to begin today: identify one recurring choice your priority could change. For example, “Develop my new service” might become: “On Wednesday, I’ll spend 30 minutes outlining it before client work.” Or “Protect my energy” might become: “Before agreeing to a deadline, I’ll check whether I can meet it within the workday I intend to keep.” Now your priority has a place in a real decision. And if your circumstances don’t allow expansion? Protecting the space something already has counts, too. So does choosing a smaller version you can sustain. Your Action Step this WeekName one thing that matters in this season — something for your business, your well-being, or how you want to lead. Then complete this sentence: “Because this matters to me, this week I will _______.” Choose one visible adjustment. Put it on your calendar or write the response you’ll use when a familiar request arrives. Then anticipate what could interfere. Decide how you’ll respond, and set a few minutes at the end of the week to ask: What happened? What did I learn? You’re giving yourself something real to practice, friend. The results can take time. 💛 Insider & VIP CornerWant a ready-to-use page for this exercise? Insiders and VIPs can download October’s CEO Decision Bridge and access the Mini Power Tool archive. Your Business Is Something You Run. YOU, Inc. Is Something You Lead. Hey Reader, When you own a business, it can become surprisingly easy to organize your entire life around what the business needs. What do my clients need? What does this project need? What does revenue need? What needs to happen before Friday? Those are important questions. You're the CEO. Paying attention to the business is part of the job. But there's another question I've been thinking about as we wrap up this quarter:...
You Already Created a Workplace. Now Choose What It’s Like to Work There. Hey Reader, Think about the places you’ve worked at over the years. Chances are, you can remember how some of them felt almost immediately. There were workplaces where people were trusted. Where mistakes became learning opportunities. Where good work was noticed. And perhaps there were others where everything was urgent, nobody really unplugged, or the official company values bore very little resemblance to what...
A Policy Is a Decision You Don’t Have to Keep Making Hey Reader, Recently, I took two actual sick days. Not “I’ll answer email from the couch” sick days. Not “I’ll rest after these three things” sick days. Actual sick days. Sinus pain. Headache. Congestion. And a brain apparently operating on dial-up internet. So I gave myself permission to stop working, retreated to a darkened room with some over-the-counter medicine, and watched mindless reality TV for two days. It was absolutely the right...
