Offense and Defense are 2 Sides of the Same Coin ... and You Need Both to Win
Even if you're not a football fan, Reader, you know that it's Super Bowl Sunday today.
Personally, I like watching football. I like the strategy behind calling plays, managing the clock, and working together as a team to win the game.
But although it really is a team sport, there's been a long-running debate as to whether offense or defense is more important to winning a championship like the Super Bowl.
Some experts say offense. Others say defense. Now, I'm a fan, not an expert, but I say you have to have both. I say they're both sides of the same coin.
In the most simplest of terms, football is a game where the winner is the team that scores the most points. Therefore, you need your offense to score more points than your opponent. And you need your defense to keep your opponent from scoring more points than you.
You need both sides of the coin.
You need both sides of the coin to win at life, too.
Just as offense and defense are the two sides of the coin when it comes to a championship football team, professional and personal are the two sides of the coin of a winning life.
There are going to be times when one side or the other - professional or personal - dominates the game. But that side can't be on the field the entire game without getting tired and burnt out. Eventually, there has to be a change of possession when the other part of the team takes the field and lets the other rest and recharge.
Some people call this having work-life balance. But I don't think balance is the right word.
You don't necessarily have to give equal time to both sides of the coin at all stages of the game. Rather, both sides have to work together to win the game.
I've found that instead of keeping my professional life completely separate from my personal life, I feel happiest when I acknowledge that they're both part of who I am as a whole and fulfilled human being.
Now, this doesn't mean that I don't set boundaries for what is work time and what is personal time. I certainly do. But that's part of embracing and honoring both sides of me.
I encourage you to do the same.
Put your offense on the field to score points. Let your defense hold strong when it's time to do so.
Use both sides of the coin, and you'll be the champion you're meant to be.
