🐾 Leadership lives in the pause

A Better Question Can Change Your Direction

The path forward may become clearer when you stop rushing toward the first answer.

Hey Reader,

Every morning, Max and I begin our walk the same way.

We leave the house, follow the sidewalk in front of our yard, and head toward the corner at the end of the block.

Then we pause.

We can continue straight toward the park, turn left for a longer walk, or turn right for the quickest loop around the block.

Sometimes we choose based on time or energy. Sometimes we look for shade. Sometimes another dog is approaching, and because Max is more comfortable with a little distance, we quietly choose another direction.

And occasionally, I let Max’s nose decide.

The thing is, our walk begins the same way every day.

But the question we ask at the corner changes where we go next.

The unspoken question that we pause at the corner to ask is essentially this:

What kind of walk do we need today?

I’ve realized that business leadership works much the same way.

When we’re busy, our questions tend to shrink:

  • How do I catch up?
  • How do I answer all these emails?
  • How do I get through today’s list?

Those aren’t bad questions. They’re survival questions.

But survival questions usually keep us focused on getting through the day. They don’t always help us choose where we want the business to go.

Leadership questions sound different:

  • What’s working better than I realize?
  • What deserves more of my attention?
  • What am I avoiding?
  • What opportunity am I not seeing yet?

Those questions don’t demand immediate action.

They create awareness.

And awareness often comes before the decision that changes everything.

In this week’s article, The Questions That Change the Direction of Your Business, I’m sharing more about the pause at the corner, why thoughtful questions reveal new possibilities, and how your Weekly CEO Meeting can become a place for curiosity rather than pressure.

Here’s the reframe I hope you carry with you:

You do not need to leave every CEO Meeting with a complete answer.

Sometimes the most valuable outcome is identifying one question worth sitting with.

You can carry it into your week. Let it simmer while you walk the dogs, work in the garden, fold laundry, or drive across town.

And by doing so, you may begin noticing ideas, patterns, and possibilities that were there all along.

The route didn’t suddenly appear.

The question simply helped you see it.

Your Action Step this Week

During your next Weekly CEO Meeting, choose one leadership question.

Write it at the top of a page, but don’t rush to answer it.

Carry it with you for the week and notice what begins connecting back to it.

Then, at the end of the week, ask:

What changed simply because I started paying attention?

You may discover that you didn’t need to work harder for a better answer.

You needed enough space to ask a better question.

Busy Employees React. CEOs Think. Why protecting your attention matters more than protecting your time. Hey Reader, Most of us don't begin the day planning to spend hours reacting to interruptions. But somehow it happens. An email arrives. A client has a question. A notification pops up. One quick task leads to another, and before long, we've been busy all morning — but the work we actually wanted to accomplish is still waiting. That realization hit me recently while I was out in the garden. I...

The One Appointment That Changes Everything Hey Reader, Have you ever noticed how easy it is to protect everyone else's time ... while treating your own as completely optional? Most of us wouldn't think twice about showing up for a client meeting. We'd be there a few minutes early, notebook in hand, ready to listen, ask good questions, and help move things forward. But when the appointment is with ourselves? That's often the first thing to disappear when life gets busy. I've been thinking...

Connected Doesn't Mean Constantly Available The lesson I brought home from a week when my laptop never left my tote bag. Hey Reader, When we left for our week in Cayucos, I packed my laptop. Not because I planned to work. But because ... well ... just in case. Just in case inspiration struck. Just in case something urgent came up. Just in case there was an emergency that couldn't wait until I got home. That laptop rode all the way to the beach in my tote bag. And then it stayed there. For the...
